Parliamentary Elections in Moldova Are Scheduled for September 28 This Year

This is an extremely important event for Moldovans, as its results will have a significant impact on their lives and the country’s political course.

Today, it is already known that Russia is trying to regain its influence in the region, which it had during the Soviet era, and therefore is investing significant resources to bring pro-Russian forces to power in Moldova. In turn, Ukraine is extremely uninterested in such a development, since, in the context of the war with Russia, it will face another threat of invasion from the South, where the problem of Moldovan Transnistria, which is actually occupied by Russia, still remains.

A few days ago, two prominent Moldovan politicians visited Ukraine: former Minister of Defence of Moldova Vitalie Marinuța and leader of the League of Cities and Communities party of mayors, Alexandru Bujorian. They held a series of meetings with Ukrainian MPs and government officials and, at the end of their visit, held a press conference for the Ukrainian public and media, where they shared information about the current state of affairs in Moldova and the prospects for the development of the political situation in their country. A. Bujorian and V. Marinuța paid special attention to the new challenges and threats that may arise as a result of a sharp change in Moldova’s political course and the coming to power of pro-Russian forces in their country.

The concern of these patriotic Moldovan politicians of European orientation is understandable. On the example of Abkhazia, South Ossetia and occupied Chechnya, we can all see how Russia fully exploits the resources of its dependent states and territories, including human resources, to advance its imperial ambitions in the post-Soviet space. The war in Ukraine is a vivid example of how Russians protect Russians, and throw Buryats, Yakuts, Chechens, Ingush and other representatives of Russia’s small peoples to the front.

If pro-Russian forces come to power in Moldova, there is a real threat of escalation of the conflict situation in Transnistria and involvement of Moldovans in a new armed confrontation. Under  such circumstances, all interested parties must join forces and take measures to stop Russian expansion and prevent a new hotbed of war in the center and east of Europe. Ukraine, Romania, and Moldova have already begun to take practical steps to prevent such a development.

Recently, a forum conditionally called the “Odesa Triangle” was held in Chernivtsi, where the foreign ministers of Ukraine, Romania, and Moldova discussed trilateral cooperation, including in the security sphere.

It is obvious that the combined forces of Ukraine, Romania, and Moldova will not be enough to effectively counter Russian aggression and ensure long-term peace and stability in the region, and therefore it is necessary to consider expanding the circle of interested states. In previous years, there have been attempts to create similar anti-imperial security blocs at the regional level.

It is known that at one time Poland actively promoted the idea of the “Intermarium”. Today, there are more and more calls for the creation of the so-called “Intermarium” – a new security association of the Baltic-Black Sea-Caspian-Adriatic region states. Against the background of the United States’ de facto giving up the  global political leadership and the UN’s helplessness in the face of Russia’s intensified aggressive foreign policy, this idea looks quite attractive and promising, but its practical implementation will depend on the position of the largest countries in the region, in particular, Ukraine, Turkey, Romania and Poland.

Of course, the emergence of a new security alliance of states at the regional level will also influence geopolitical processes in the world, and therefore it is obvious that the solution to this issue will largely depend on the position of global political players, in particular, the United States, the United Kingdom, China and the EU. At the same time, it can already be stated that after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the modern system of international security and law has been completely destroyed, and therefore humanity needs to join forces to find new forms and methods of ensuring peace, international law and order and stability, both at the regional and global levels.
